There are hundreds of castles and palaces in Portugal. Pena Palace is one of my favorites. This colorful fairytale castle sits high up on a hill with panoramic views. Pena Palace is located in Sintra, which is home to many other castles and palaces such as the Castle of the Moors and Quinta da Regaleira, with its breathtaking gardens and mythical well.

Beautiful Golden Beaches

The spectacular coastline in southern Portugal is known for its beautiful beaches, rock formations, and luxurious seaside resorts. This area also has caves that can only be reached via boat, so enjoying the coast on a boat is a must.

Medieval Cities

Aside from the well-known cities of Porto and Lisbon, there are some hidden treasures in Portugal. Sintra and the walled city of Óbidos are two lovely quaint villages full of charm and history. Sintra has several amazing palaces while Óbidos will transport you back in time with its beautiful city walls and medieval architecture.

The Azores – These 9 islands off the coast of Portugal are still a hidden gem. Here is what you can experience in the Azores… lovely towns with mosaic cobblestone streets, not far from these towns you can visit hot springs and float in thermal waters, hike to waterfalls, and marvel at beautiful gardens. Enjoy activities such as mountain biking, canyoning, surfing, canoeing, and infinite coastal hikes.

The Wine Regions

Portugal has several wine regions, including the Douro Valley. This is one of the most spectacular and oldest wine regions in the world. The Douro River flowing in between the hills of rolling vineyards is truly magical. A spa hotel nestled into the hills is the perfect home for exploring the area.

Portugal may not be as popular as Italy or France but there are so many hidden gems to be discovered here. It’s a beautiful country you should add to your bucket list.
